QU’EST-CE QUE LE CENTRE SOCIAL AUTOGÉRÉ?
En mai 2007 le projet d'installer un Centre social autogéré (CSA) à Pointe Saint-Charles a été lancé. Les CSA sont des espaces autogérés, établis très souvent dans des bâtiments abandonnés dans des quartiers urbains un peu partout dans le monde, qui sont en fait des centres d’activités culturelles, sociales et politiques. La particularité des CSA, ce qui les différencie des centres communautaires, c’est à la fois leur autonomie face à l’État, leur refus de hiérarchie et de l’autorité illégitime, ainsi que la gestion par la démocratie directe.

Le projet est maintenant porté par plusieurs comités et par plusieurs projets autonomes (notamment un projet de café/bar et salle de spectacle, un centre de médias indépendant, un atelier de vélo, un projet de jardin sur le toit et de bouffe collective, un cinéma itinérant et un projet d'éducation populaire.) Depuis mai 2007, plusieurs assemblées publiques, party bénéfice et soirées de projection de films ont été organisées. Le lancement officiel du CSA, des 6-7-8 juin 2008 derniers, dans des espaces prêtés par des groupes communautaires, n’était que le début d’une programmation régulière jusqu’au moment du « déménagement » dans notre édifice permanent au printemps 2009!

The planning is over! It’s time to take action!

WHAT IS THE AUTONOMOUS SOCIAL CENTER?
The project to install an Autonomous Social Center in Point St. Charles was launched in May 2007. Autonomous Social Centers (ASC) are self-managed spaces that house cultural, social and political activities, very often established in abandoned buildings in urban neighbourhoods throughout the world. What makes ASCs different, what differentiates them from the community centers we are used to, are a number of characteristics, including their autonomy vis-à-vis the State, their refusal of illegitimate authority, and their commitment to management by direct democracy.

The project is now being carried by several committees and autonomous projects (including a concert-hall and bar, an independent media center, a bike repair shop, a liberated kitchen and gardening project, a travelling movie theatre and an alternative education initiative.)

Since May 2007, several public assemblies, benefit party and film projections have been organised. The official “opening” of the ASC on June 6-8 2008, in spaces lent by neighbourhood organisations, sets the stage for regular programming that run until we are ready to “move into” our chosen building…in the spring of 2009!
